Poems about nature:

1)      “Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening” by Robert frost:

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sounds the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Message of the poem:
Through Robert frost’s poem of 4 stanzas, he describes a man walking in the woods on a snowy evening and stops by, Takes some moments to enjoy the beautiful view. The man wanted and tried to stay longer watching the beautiful woods, but the cold, the snow and the distance that is left for him to go home forces him to continue his ride. Even if the words are easy, the meaning of the poem is very strong: the simplicity of nature.
Poetic devices:
  • Rhymes between “know” “though” and “snow”. Between “queer” “near” and “year”. Between “shake” “mistake” and “flake”. Between “deep” “keep” and “sleep.
  • There a repetition of a line in the 4th stanza to remind the reader the duty of the man, and that I is to go home.
  • There is a personification in the 3rd stanza, where the poet gives nature a human action such as shaking a bell to clarify the simplicity of nature
  • The tone of the poem is very relaxing, reminds the reader of the simplicity of nature, where there is no complications.

2)      “The sun just touched the morning” by Emily Dickinson:

The Sun—just touched the Morning—
The Morning—Happy thing—
Supposed that He had come to dwell—
And Life would all be Spring!

She felt herself supremer—
A Raised—Ethereal Thing!
Henceforth—for Her—What Holiday!
Meanwhile—Her wheeling King—
Trailed—slow—along the Orchards—
His haughty—spangled Hems—
Leaving a new necessity!
The want of Diadems!

The Morning—fluttered—staggered—
Felt feebly—for Her Crown—
Her unanointed forehead—
Henceforth—Her only One!

Message of the poem:
This poem, composed of 3 stanzas, written by Emily Dickinson describes the morning, when the sun touches the morning, there are metaphors and personifications that express the message of the poem, Nature gives un only one life, one youth, make the best out of it, don’t screw it up.

Poetic devices:
  • Rhymes between “morning”, “thing” and “spring”. Between “thing” and “king”. Assonance between “hems” and “diadems”. Assonance between “fluttered” and “staggered”
  • There is an alliteration in the line “Felt feebly for her crown” and “Henceforth – her only one”
  • There is a personification in this poem, where the morning represents the one’s youth where it says “the morning – happy thing” and “the morning – fluttered – staggered, felt feebly for her crown”. We can also see it in the “she” at the beginning of the 2nd stanza. Also, there is a second personification of the sun this time, where the “he” is the sun, also seen in the lines: “wheeling king” and “haughty, spangled hems”.
  • The tone of the poem is very positive at the beginning then it degrades into a tone of “caution” or in other words, the poet is saying be careful about losing your youth, and at the 3rd stanza concludes with the message: nature gives you only one life, one youth, make the best out of it. All of it through personification of nature.

3)      “Nature, the gentlest mother” by Emily Dickinson:

Nature, the gentlest mother,
Impatient of no child,
The feeblest or the waywardest,
Her admonition mild

In forest and the hill
By traveller is heard,
Restraining rampant squirrel
Or too impetuous bird.

How fair her conversation,
A summer afternoon,--
Her household, her assembly;
And when the sun goes down

Her voice among the aisles
Incites the timid prayer
Of the minutest cricket,
The most unworthy flower.

When all the children sleep
She turns as long away
As will suffice to light her lamps;
Then, bending from the sky

With infinite affection
And infiniter care,
Her golden finger on her lip,
Wills silence everywhere.

Message of poem:
Clearly as it says in the title: Nature, the gentles mother, we can see that the main message of this poem that nature represents purity, love, simplicity and pure beauty, far different than any human creation. We can see it in the personification the poet made.
Poetic devices:
  • Rhymes between “child” and “mild”. Between “heard” “bird”. Between “player” and “flower”.
  • Alliteration in the line “her household, her assembly”
  • Personification: the poet is comparing nature with a mother “Nature, the gentlest mother”(it is also a metaphor). This personification is used to show how nature is kind, pure, beautiful and strong. In the second stanza, the traveler represents a human that is unwanted of the mother of nature. It is a personification same as the situation when the mother protects her child from bad things or people.
  • There is a strong imagery in the poem in the second stanza to make the reader imagine the stress of the mother nature about the traveler
  • The tone of the poem begins in a positive way; the poet describes all the amazing qualities nature has. Then, beginning from the second stanza, a situation of change comes along, the tone of this stanza is more like a person telling a stories. It continues this way till its end.
Poems about hope:

4)      “Hope” by Emily Bronte:

HOPE was but a timid friend ;
She sat without the grated den,
Watching how my fate would tend,
Even as selfish-hearted men.

She was cruel in her fear ;
Through the bars one dreary day,
I looked out to see her there,
And she turned her face away !

Like a false guard, false watch keeping,
Still, in strife, she whispered peace
She would sing while I was weeping ;
If I listened, she would cease.

False she was, and unrelenting ;
When my last joys strewed the ground,
Even Sorrow saw, repenting,
Those sad relics scattered round ;

Hope, whose whisper would have given
Balm to all my frenzied pain,
Stretched her wings, and soared to heaven.
Went, and ne'er returned again !

Message of the poem:
The main message of the poem is hope, losing hope when we most need it. This poem tells a story of a young women who always felt hope in her life, but then, after the negative experiences, felt and sensed no hope at all in her life. Hope had betrayed her when she most needed it. It does explain the message of the poem because this young woman lost hope when she most needed it, when she was struggling.
Poetic devices:
  • Rhymes between “friend”, “den”, “tend”, “men”. Between “day” and “away”. Between “keeping” and “weeping”, “peace”, “cease”. Between “unrelenting”, “repending” and “ground”, “sound”. Between “pain”, “again”.
  • There is alliteration in the lines “one dreary day”, “Sorrow saw repenting”, “Those sad relics scattered round” and “whose whisper would”.
  • Simile in the 1st verse of the 1st stanza, where the poet describes hope as a timid friend “hope was but a timid friend”. Also in the 4th verse of the 1st stanza “Even as selfish-hearted men”. Here the poet describes hope like a selfish hearted man. Same as “She was cruel in her fear”, “false she was, and unrelenting” “Like a false guard, false watch keeping”.
  • “hope was but a timid friend” is a simile but also a personification. The poet represents hope as a timid friend.

5)      “Hope is the thing with feathers” by Emily Dickinson:

"Hope" is the thing with feathers—
That perches in the soul—
And sings the tune without the words—
And never stops—at all—

And sweetest—in the Gale—is heard—
And sore must be the storm—
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm—

I've heard it in the chillest land—
And on the strangest Sea—
Yet, never, in Extremity,
It asked a crumb—of Me.

Message of the poem:
The clear message of this poem is that hope exists for all of us, we are the ones to choose to have or not by keeping positive or not at difficult times.

Poetic devices:
  • There are some Rhymes in this poem, between “heard” and “bird”. Between “storm” and worm”. Between “sea” and “me”
  • Alliteration: “And sore must be the storm”, and “And on the strangest Sea”
  • Imagery is also used in this poem. Firstly, we need to know what feather is. A feather is a bird. Therefore we can conclude that the 1st verse of the 1st stanza: “"Hope" is the thing with feathers” is an image of an abstract idea created by the poet to the readers mind. “That perches in the soul” imagery is used in this too, the image of a bird to describe hope. In the second stanza, the poet uses imagery to describe endless hope with the endless singing of the bird, it is also a metaphor.
  • The tone of the poem is positive.

6)      “Hope abides” by Sri Chinmoy:

Hope abides; therefore I abide.
Countless frustrations have not cowed me.
I am still alive, vibrant with life.
The black cloud will disappear,
The morning sun will appear once again
In all its supernal glory.

Message of the poem:
In my opinion, the main message of the poem is that hope keeps us alive and vivid. As it says in the beginning “hope abide; therefore I abide” it clearly shows the message. In addition if we relate that one to “in all its supernatural glory”. We can conclude that hope keeps us alive.
Poetic devices:
  • Rhymes between: “alive” and “life, “appear” and “disappear”
  • There is a repetition of the word “abide”
  • Oxymoron: “the black cloud will disappear – The morning sun will appear once again” we can clearly see that those two parts have a contradictory meaning but in the context of the poem it says that after hard times we revive again and be happy, hope had kept us alive while dark moments.
  • The tone of the poem is positive, and there is a feeling of the poet being proud. It is included in the poem.
Poems about love

7)      “Broken” by Rachel RTVW:

Broken hearts, love's deceit,
pieces fall down to my feet.
Broken promises, love's a lie,
puddles form from tears I cry.
Broken dreams, love's illusion,
sorrowed cause of your intrusion.
Broken hope, love's a game,
doesn't last, ends the same.
Broken sleep, love's the cause,
digs at me with sharpened claws.
Broken spirit, love of sorrow,
stolen now is my tomorrow.
Broken life, love is lost,
Broken now and that's the cost.

Message of the Poem:
It clearly shows that the poet does not believe in love. That is the main message, love is a lie, love is a deceit, illusion, game, but most importantly, love is lost.

Poetic devices:
  • Rhymes between: “lie” and “cry”, “illusion” and “intrusion”, “game” and “same”, “cause” and “claws”, “sorrow” and “tomorrow” and finally “lost” and “cost.
  • There is a constant repetition of the word “broken” and “love” therefore we can conclude that these verses begin like this: Broken .................…..., love ………………….
  • Alliteration: “from from”
  • Hyperbole is used constantly in this poem. Example: Broken “hearts”, “dreams”, “hope”, “sleep”, “spirit”, “life” etc…. dreams, hopes, sleep, spirit, life can’t be broken, it is a hyperbole to express the intensity of the poets pain.
  • The tone of the poem is very negative, hopeless and frustrating.

8)      “My greatest fear” by Lu

This fear I feel deep inside
follows me around, never far from my side

Can you promise it will always be
us forever ... for eternity ?

No amount of love can erase
the fear that another, could take my place

Painfully arguments are hard to swallow
will colored rainbows always follow ?

As we age and grow old
could our love die, turning cold ?

I know you would give me the stars above
yet can you promise me eternal love ?

My greatest fear will always be
that someday... you will stop loving me

Message of the poem:
As it clearly says, the main message of the poem is the fear of someone dear to him would stop loving him.

Poetic devices:
  • Rhymes between: “inside” and “side”, “be” and “eternity”, “erase” and “place”, “swallow” and “follow”, “old” and “cold”, “above” and “love”, “be” and “me”
  • There are some hyperbole in this poem: “no amount of love can erase the fear that another, could take my place”, in this stanza, we can see that “erase” fear is not possible, it shows the impossibility of the amount of love securing the fear the poet has. “Painfully arguments are hard to swallow” n argument can’t be swollen, it’s an hyperbole.
  • Personification: “follows me around”, in this context the poet is giving a feeling the characteristic to walk, which is a human action.
  • The tone of the poem is negative, the poet wonders in the same time. It is also a frustrating.

My Poem

The land of no goodbyes by Sarah Raafat

In the land of no good-byes
We would share our deepest feelings
We woke up in the mornings
Impatient of our meetings

I look back across the seasons
Thankful to god for finding my mirror
The endless words of a “forever together”
Made us closer than ever

But now, I see you half away from my land
The land of no good-byes
I keep the loneliness bottled up in my hand
You can see it in my eyes

My heart cries out for you
I wish I could say it face to face
And shout: “I miss you”
